Mortal Shell

I am not me and the skin is not mine

Mortal Shell is the second notable souls-like game to come out in the last month. Just like Hell’s point, it was the fruit of the labors of a small studio, but unlike the Canadians from Cradle Games, the developers from Cold Symmetry did not put ambition at the forefront. Instead of a large, but faceless and empty world, they managed to create a very attractive, chamber universe, the history of which ends even faster than you expect. And this is very disappointing, because you just managed to fall in love …

To be honest, Mortal Shell is still far from ideal. The local plot and world, intriguing at first with their mystery no worse than Lordran or Drangleic, eventually give an even more vague idea of \u200b\u200blocal mythology. The main character is a humanoid creature that is trying to escape from unfamiliar places, using a unique ability – the ability to “try on” the mortal shells of fallen warriors. Everything else that is happening around is much more difficult to understand, but the setting is still not devoid of the same attraction, familiar from the best works of the masters of understatement from FromSoftware.

The shells mentioned above are some equivalent of armor and character archetypes. By moving into one of them, the protagonist gets his own set of characteristics and perks to study, which, as they open for the local analogue of “souls”, also shed light on the personality of the forcibly laid to rest “skin”. So, the cynical mercenary Harris, available from the very beginning, is a local all-rounder who runs more or less briskly, while possessing good defense and stamina. Another character, the melancholic novice Til, is unusually mobile, able to heal from the effects of poison, but at the same time dies from a couple of pokes. There is, in general, the opportunity to choose the skin to suit your style, but within strict limits: all characters specialize in open-close combat, since there was no room in the Mortal Shell budget for mages, archers and dastardly robbers who rely on backstabs.

In general, despite the fact that Mortal Shell is passed in one breath, certain questions about the gameplay component still appear. Yes, a budget game allows for an exclusive emphasis on close combat. The viscous slow animation in fights, which you just need to get used to, can also be attributed to conscious design decisions – in this regard, the creation of Cold Symmetry is more like not a frisky Dark Souls 3, but some kind of Lords of the Fallen. What is really strange is the approach to the arsenal here. Of the four weapons available, three are slow, cumbersome, and work more or less the same, despite the fact that they have different sets of moves. Only a combination of a hammer and a chisel is suitable for the role of a more or less fast killing device, but in fact even their speed leaves much to be desired.

An interesting find in the gameplay was that any item found must first be used or tasted in order to understand its purpose. It seems to be a trifle, but it is perceived unusually and new, even though here it was not without its mini-nonsense: the local huckster Vlas, for example, sells the same unknown things, forcing them to conduct their own experiments after purchase. Well, yes, these are trifles – just think, the entrepreneurs of this universe did not go to training courses for sales consultants. Where the big disappointment is the study of the hidden corners of locations: at best, a long journey deep into some branch of the catacombs turns into a useful consumable for pumping an arsenal or shells, but here are some secret bosses, interesting lore elements, A thorough study of the world is not able to bring a new weapon or a unique ability. It would seem naive to expect more from a budget game, but excuses are excuses, and in terms of content, it turned out to be too predictable and stingy.

However, Mortal Shell is trying to atone for gameplay shortcomings with its fresh ideas. The first of these is the “petrification” mechanic, which replaces blocking with a shield in the game, but with a couple of very important differences. Firstly, you can turn it on almost at any time. Seeing that you do not have time to forestall an enemy strike, you can use the ability to painlessly wait out the damage in an impenetrable statue, then complete your swing and slam into the adversary’s skull. In words, it may not look impressive, but in reality it looks very impressive and unusual. True, there is a “second”: for the ability to turn on the ability at any time, you have to pay with the inability to do it several times in a row – first you have to wait out the rollback timer. Another feature, albeit similar to the “second chance” from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, also looks fresh and unbanal. Having received fatal damage, the hero ejects from the borrowed corpse and is forced to make a decision: risk climbing into the shell and restore health under the nose of the enemy, retreat, or impose a fight in underwear.

But ideas are ideas, but in reality, the project Cold Symmetry was pulled out of the abyss of sterility by its beauty and atmosphere. That’s where the same inexpensive Hell point hit the nose painfully – Mortal Shell is damn good visually, soundly convincing and beautiful in its atmosphere and design. Each location encountered refers to one of the elements: gloomy and stuffy dungeons – to the earth, a rocky valley hanging in the void – to the air, a dilapidated temple – to the fire, and the starting interworld and swamp – to the water. The authors also creatively approached the bestiary, albeit without the gloomy Japanese fantasies and fanaticism. The local sadists deserve special mention, before their death, they tear off their heads and throw them at the hero. Not bad and bosses, but only one of them is something original and does not resemble a person,

But back to the budget issue of Mortal Shell. After all, it manifests itself not only in the lack of rewards for exploring locations and some gameplay flaws. Against the background of many competitors in the genre, Mortal Shell is also distinguished by its short duration. For some 10-15 hours, the game manages to show almost everything that it has, and as a result, the end comes just when you are just imbued with what is happening as it should. To some, this will seem like a disadvantage – maybe even a serious one. However, it is better to do little, but in good conscience, using the available resources to the maximum. And the Cold Symmetry team coped with this with dignity, releasing a very good, but modest-sized game.
