If you have some miserable one hundred and twenty-one days left before retirement, then realizing that in your office there is a beautiful, but still a stranger, you must immediately call the police and run away from there. As all world experience shows, beautiful strangers in such circumstances rarely promise something good. But Sonny Peryeland would not be himself if he had not embarked on such an adventure.
The creators of The Wild Gentlemen are well aware of what they made the game about, and such a beginning in the case of noir is not even a stamp, but such a respectful inscription on the margins: “We understand everything, guys.” But respect is respect, and the authors are also not afraid to slightly change the rules: here the main character very quickly gets (well, returns) a partner.
One gets the feeling that the main source of inspiration for the authors was Blacksad: Under the Skin, released last year, and its comic source. Unless there were people with animal heads in Blacksad, and animals with human bodies in the Chicken Police. And this changes everything!.. There are no people in this world, but all our smaller brothers are reasonable. The general history is generally utterly extensive, but no one forces the player to study it thoroughly. It’s just that in Chicken Police there are not only central plot points, but also side points where you can go to look for items, chat with characters and learn something new about the history of the world, but this is absolutely not necessary.
All the characters are made by merging photographs of animal heads with human bodies, which in some places looks a little frightening – once the authors planned ordinary drawn characters, but in the end they went along such an amusing path, sometimes making the game some even frighteningly realistic.
Numerous beasts, however, have little animation, because in essence the game is a visual novel with several additional elements. Since the Chicken Police is a detective story, there is an interrogation system where, depending on the characteristics of the character (modest, brave, frightened, and so on), it is necessary to select the right questions. It is quite difficult to fill them up, but sometimes it is not easy to hold them at the highest level. There are still a few quest moments and mini-games with skirmishes and other things, but the latter do not last long and are passed quite simply.
But the quest part contains an important oversight of the authors. The fact is that on every screen where you can examine or take something, a large palm or eye appears – which is reasonable. But when it is necessary to zoom in on some object and interact with a three-dimensional model, then there are no contextual changes of the cursor on it. For example, in one problem you need to set the clock correctly. It’s not difficult to think of this, but the arrows do not react to clicks in any way – it turns out that they need to be clamped and pulled, which is not at all obvious in the context of the rest of the interface. This brings the player back to the dense era of pixel hunting, forcing them to click everything and everywhere in the hope that maybe something will work out. But fortunately, there are not many such moments.
The rest of the game is made very stylishly. Black and white with occasional color accents bursting into the picture, whether it be the green eyes of the local Femme Fatale Natasha Koshenko or the red blood spreading over the parquet. There is not much of this, but it is done very sensibly and works great on the atmosphere. Also, the voices of the characters are very immersive: the main character Sonny talks like an old cop with a drinking problem, and his partner Marty Maktsyp is younger and more cheeky, which is also clearly audible. Well, when Natasha tries to make a good impression at a meeting, then goosebumps really run from her voice, it is so seductive. The characters in the game have accents and all sorts of stammering whispers. Everything is done at the highest level, the actors tried. In the dialogues, there are also constant references to the animality of the characters in the form of some words, which was additionally used in the Russian translation: the characters swear by expressions like “permo” and “quack”. And “censored”, and the characters are suitable, and everything is clear.
The game turned out to be interesting, original. She does not shy away from blood and even partially nudity (especially in portraits), to the delight of the furry. With good thematic music, a good but not particularly prominent central plot and a bunch of optional information that is very interesting to study (to understand, for example, why Natasha has a small Russian accent). Judging by the movie posters, the game’s world is somewhere in the region of the 40s according to our calendar, and it turned out to be much larger than necessary for one story, so a continuation may well follow. Now to patch up the quest part and fix the not very convenient diary – and it might turn out quite well. But even now it’s a solid game that deserves the right to be the start of an interesting series.
